Titleist is without doubt one of the leaders in irons for better players. From go to an all wrought iron sign a couple of years ago, the company introduced several sheets, muscle-back, and cavity-forged iron that have dedicated followers.
But the best iron player market is relatively small, and big money is in the biggest game improvement irons. Titleist's latest attempt to muscle in on the Callaways and TaylorMade in the game in the category of iron is the improvement, which hit golf shops this spring. I had the opportunity to try a game to see how these irons new stack against other high handicap plates.
Seeing the iron Titleist in my golf bag gives me a warm feeling, even if the glow of nostalgia. After playing small leaves forged, while learning the game, my first cavity back irons were a great set of Titleist DCI Gold Medals I've played for several years. The stainless steel cast iron is much more forgiving, but still had a fresh design that said "I am a serious player." After monitoring the DCI Black (minus offset) and gold plates, the large size of ICD, Titleist ceded the high handicap market iron to sister brand Cobra.
