Applying a protective hairspray while using your ceramic hair straightener is always advised. However, failure to clean the build up left on the ceramic plates can actually cause breakage. If you take the time to clean your flat after every few uses, you can keep your hair looking healthy and glossy. Here are a few tips.
After you have used your hair straightener, unplug it and let cool down. Make sure it is left in a safe place, where it will not burn anything. Once the iron has completely cooled down, wet an old clean rag. Wring it out, and gently wipe down your entire iron, including the ceramic plates.
If you still see build up stuck to the plates after you wipe it down with the rag, you may need to get a cleansing solution. If you can't afford the solution, make your own. You'll need some alcohol and paper towels.
Saturate the paper towel with alcohol, and gently scrub your styling tool. Don't use anything abrasive, such as pot scrubbers, or wire brushes. Doing so will only damage the plates. You may have to scrub for a little while, and the paper towel might tear. Just throw it out, soak another one, and repeat until all of the gunk is off.
Lastly, use a wet rag that has been rinsed in plain water, to clean off the cleaning solution. Failure to do so will burn and break your hair. The chemical reaction from the iron heating up, can often times emit toxic fumes, if you're using a professional cleaning solution. The same might occur if you are using non abrasive household cleaners on your iron as well.
Even the best ceramic hair straightener needs to be cleaned properly. Maintaining the overall appearance of your iron, will save you unnecessary hair damage, caused by product build up.
