DO: Dry hair before using hair straighteners
Shampoo and condition your hair as usual, then apply serum using the palms of your hands, smoothing the hair along its length. On the whole, salon hair products are more effective than cheaper ones and will help to produce the desired overall effect. Use a paddle brush to encourage straightness as you dry the hair, and turn on the straighteners while you brush. For best results, don't stop as you pull the straighteners through the hair and try to keep a consistent method.
DON'T: Use hair straighteners on wet hair
Unless you have 'wet n dry' straighteners, always make sure your hair is dry before using them. Using hair straighteners on wet hair is likely to damage the ends and it is never a good idea to mix electricity and water because this is a safety hazard.
DO: Make it easy for yourself
Use clips to separate one inch layers of hair so you can straighten the hair bit by bit. Go from the tips to the ends, then undo the clip once the layer is straight and move onto the next layer. Pull your fingers through the hair after every layer to bring the shape back together. Start from the front, which is easier to work on, and move towards the back.
DON'T: Rush - at least not the first few times you use hair straighteners
The look you are after will take a bit of time to get the hang of so you need to take your time and get it right. You'll be a achieve far better results in the long term if the first few times you use hair straighteners you make sure you have enough time to get the look exactly right.
DO: Make sure you are happy with the end result
When using hair straighteners, one of the most important things is that the style is consistent all over the hair. Turn your back to the mirror and hold a hand mirror in front of you to inspect the back of the hair. If there are sections which are not completely straight you will need to go over them. For larger sections of hair or those at the back which are harder to reach, you may need two or three tries to perfect the look. Finish off the style by blending the ends, using the straighteners without any clips to create a more together finish and preventing separation.
