During the period of time, literature has played an important role in our lives. As it is, before the advent of television and radio, literature was the only available mode of entertainment, communication and ideas. As the twentieth century is one of the most remarkable periods in world history and no literature was left out of these huge events, which occur during this period.
Technological advances were in the 20th century which allowed reduce the cost of book production. This did more to a considerable increase in production of popular literature and the literature trivial. It should understand here that the division of so-called popular literature and literature high in this period is not marked by any specific demarcation. As a result this, this division is not quite all. This means that multiple genres like pulp fiction fluctuate between the two.
Several different genera as science fiction and detective stories played a vital role in maintaining the enthusiasm of the average reader to the literature. Although generally ignored by the main literary critics, these genres more developed and, subsequently, to establish their settlements, and the delivery of critics.
Several works literary importance have been broken out during this period such as Quotations from Chairman Mao. Published in 1966, this book managed to sell over 900 million copies. In recent times, when we talk about best-sellers, then no one can ignore the huge success of the Harry Potter series. As it is, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was published in 1997, sold 120 million copies and became a star of JK Rowling.
Other works include Century and then there were none, that was published in 1939 and sold to sell over 115 million copies. Furthermore, an important work of this period is the Lord of the Rings. This magnificent piece of literature sold over 100 million copies, has achieved much of his fame after the release of the film trilogy based on it. It was even voted the book of the century in various polls.
Other important works of fiction of Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, and a room of their own by Virginia Woolf, The earth Waste, TS Eliot, Ulysses, James Joyce, The Trial by Franz Kafka, Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, Aelita by Alexei Tolstoy, nome della rosa (1980 - Translation into English: The Name of the Rose, 1983), Il pendolo di De Foucault (1988 - English translation: Foucault's Pendulum, 1989), by Umberto Eco Il and Cat's Cradle (1963) and Slaughterhouse Five (1969) by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
Several other great works of literature have occurred during this period. However, due to lack of space, mentioning all these brilliant pieces of literature is an absolutely impossible task.
